Open Meeting - 28th February 2017

May/June 2017 Heritage Lottery First World War:then and now fund application

We are starting our application for funding to create a local arboretum and memorial garden to commemorate local men who fought and died in the First World War and are buried in St John's churchyard or recorded on the Roll of Honour. The project will include:

* an avenue of native trees creating a path to the existing Remembrance Garden

* a small rose garden, made up of different coloured roses signifying the various stages of grief and bereavement through colour eg. red (anger), purple (denial), pink (acceptance) and white (remembrance)

* a memorial inscribed with the name of every local casualty who died in the World Wars and buried in St John’s

* an information board about the personal lives and stories of the men whose names can found on St John’s Roll of Honour eg. their regiments, where they died, and also about the Battle of the Somme

* a new path linking the existing main path to the avenue path

* an update to the Friends website with pages relating to casualty stories and information about the arboretum.

The project will be completed by November 2018 to coincide with the Centenary celebrations for the end of the First World War.
